To help your puppy learn good bathroom habits, training them using a crate is a great idea. Dogs don’t like using the bathroom near where they sleep or spend much time, so take advantage of this natural preference of dogs and teach them to use the bathroom outside or in a desired area.
Make sure to get your dog neutered or spayed at six months old. You should have him or her spayed or neutered along with taking him or her to obedience classes. Any dog not “fixed” will be very excitable and easily distracted in obedience sessions. Many behavior problems can be solved by additional exercise. If your dog is acting out, he may not be getting enough exercise. Try to walk your dog at least three times a day. If your dog is a working breed, at least one of those walks should be a run. A tired dog is often a well-behaved dog.
Do not repeat commands. When you are training any command, be ready to enforce it. Repeating a command over and over when your dog is ignoring you is one of the most common reasons for training failure. For example, when training “come,” start out with your dog on a leash. If they do not come on the first try, repeat the command once, while pulling toward you. This shows the dog that your commands are not to be ignored. Shy dogs benefit from re-socializing. Oftentimes, dogs have behavioral incidents with certain situations, certain people or other dogs, that go unnoticed by us. We might not realize, but these interactions have given our dogs a sour taste about these circumstances. Re-socializing your dog to the stimuli he’s upset by, can help him overcome his anxiety. While the occasoinal punishment will probably be necessary, dogs generally respond much better to rewards than punishments. This means you should always show praise and treats for good behavior in an effort to recognize and reinforce it. Additionally, you should reserve punishment and shame for only the worst moments. While an eight week old puppy will not have the vaccines required to go outside for long periods of time, they can have short trips outside to learn how to do their business. Every time they do their business, treat and praise excitedly. Your puppy will be a potty champion in no time.
